Codex banked reset, explained
A banked reset is a one-time Codex usage-limit reset saved to your account until you use it or it expires — that is OpenAI’s own definition, from its Help Center article “How banked Codex resets work”. What a banked reset is, per OpenAI
- It is saved to your account until you use it or it expires.
- It is not purchased credit and does not permanently increase your plan’s usage limit.

Banked resets vs. automatic resets
The Help Center draws the line this way: a banked reset “is saved to your account and must be applied by you”, while an automatic or global reset “is applied directly to eligible usage limits and does not create a saved reset.” A single announcement may include one or both types, so an announcement on this site can be tagged either way by its own wording; each recorded row below shows the original post. Some offers include a separate banked reset alongside an automatic one, and some announcements say outright that the reset applies to the account right away and will not appear as a banked reset (that is the Help Center’s description of specific past grants).

Codex 1 reset available: how to find and use one
If you searched codex 1 reset available, or 1 reset available codex, this is the entry the Help Center is talking about. To use a saved reset:
- Open settings → usage on the desktop app, the CLI, or on the web. From the profile menu you can also select the usage summary showing the available reset count.
- Select the usage summary showing an available reset, such as “1 reset available” or “Full reset”.
- Review the expiration details, then confirm that you want to use it.

What happens when you use one
Using a full banked reset refreshes your 5-hour and weekly Codex usage windows and changes your weekly reset date; you won’t also receive a weekly reset on the original reset day (the article’s example uses a Friday). The reset is consumed only when it successfully refreshes at least one eligible usage window — if there is nothing to reset, it remains available. How to get more Codex resets, and how many there have been
Banked resets are promotional, and OpenAI Support does not provide manual or courtesy resets, so there is no request route. The Help Center says that for some Plus and Pro promotions a successful referral can add a banked Codex rate-limit reset. This site cannot grant, sell or trigger a reset. It has recorded 10 banked resets and 60 global resets so far (listed on /history/). How many your own account holds is shown in your usage summary, and the Help Center article states no maximum number an account can hold.

OpenAI uses several names. The Help Center says “banked reset”; the developer documentation and app-server protocol say “earned reset” and “rate-limit reset”; strings in the open-source CLI say “usage limit reset(s)” and “Redeem reset”. The CLI documentation says /usage lets you “redeem an available earned reset” (CLI commands), and the protocol docs describe account/rateLimitResetCredit/consume (app-server docs). What is still unstated
The Help Center article does not give a maximum number of banked resets an account can hold, or one expiry period that applies to every offer. For eligibility and terms on a specific promotion, read that offer and the article itself.
