Codex banked reset, explained
What a banked reset is, how it differs from a regular reset, and every one this site has recorded.
Banked reset vs. regular reset
A regular reset clears your Codex usage immediately, per the announcement's own wording each time. A banked reset is described in the announcements as being loaded or credited into accounts, not applied on the spot — see the exact wording of each one in the recorded list below. This site tags each recorded event with one badge or the other based on that wording.
What happens after it's credited isn't something OpenAI has published in general. One user report describes it surfacing later as an available reset to redeem — see openai/codex issue #47251, “You have a new rate limit reset available - only I don't” (a user report on GitHub, not an official OpenAI statement). Redemption timing and any expiry rule are not published anywhere this site has found — check your own account rather than assuming a general rule.
How to check if one landed on your account
Neither this site nor any third party can see your account. Check it yourself:
- Your usage page: chatgpt.com/codex/settings/usage
- The Codex CLI's
/statuscommand — each window it shows reports its ownNN% left (resets <time>); paste the output into the parser on /usage-limits/ to read it more easily. That line is the only thing this site can point you to about a window's own reset timing — it says nothing about a banked reset specifically.
Spend it now, or hold it?
That depends on your current pace and how much headroom you have left before your own window resets on its own. /worth-it/ is a calculator that walks through the tradeoff with your own numbers — nothing here states a general rule, because it genuinely depends on your usage.
What's unknown
Not published, as far as this site has recorded: whether a banked reset expires and after how long, exactly when or how it gets applied to your account, and whether that varies by plan. If a specific announcement states something about a specific banked reset, it will be in that announcement's own summary below and linked source post. Check your usage page for what your own account currently shows — this site does not fill the gap with a general rule OpenAI hasn't stated.

Frequently asked questions
How do I know if I have a codex banked reset?
Check your usage page at https://chatgpt.com/codex/settings/usage, or run /status in the Codex CLI — neither this site nor any third party can see your account. Exactly when a credited banked reset becomes visible isn't published; one user report describes it surfacing later as an available reset (see /banked-reset/), but that's a report, not an official timeline.
Does a codex banked reset expire?
Not published, as far as this site has recorded. OpenAI hasn't stated a general expiration policy for banked resets; check the announcement linked from each banked-reset row below for anything it states about that specific one.
My codex banked reset disappeared — what happened?
This site has no visibility into individual accounts and can't explain a specific disappearance. Check your usage page and the original announcement (linked below) for any stated conditions; if neither explains it, OpenAI support is the only place that can look at your account.
Should I spend my banked reset now or hold it?
That depends on your current usage pace and how much headroom you have left before the window resets — use /worth-it/ for a calculator that walks through the tradeoff with your own numbers.
